Severe Weather

Colliers monitors local weather daily. In general, there are three types of severe weather in our area, which would require extra precautions: Severe Thunderstorm Activity, Tornadoes, and Severe Snow or Blizzards.

Severe Thunderstorm Activity

The local weather service will issue advisories predicting areas of probable thunderstorm activity and the estimated duration of the storm. Strong rain and winds, as well as lightening can be expected in this type of storm.

Tornadoes

By definition, a Tornado Warning is an alert by the National Weather Service confirming a tornado sighting and location. The weather service will announce the approximate time of detection and direction of movement. Winds are generally greater than 75 miles per hour in a tornado.

Severe Snow or Blizzards

In the event of a blizzard or severe snow storm, Colliers will share updated information with the Tenant Coordinators in regards to possible building closure, status of snow removal, etc.

Severe Weather Precautions

Should a severe storm develop in our area, public announcements will be made via radio, television, or steady blasts of five minutes in duration by the Municipal Defense Warning System. In the event of a severe storm of any kind, please take the following precautions:

  • Move as far away from the exterior perimeter of the building as possible. Corridors, elevator lobbies, restrooms and stairwells will be safe. Stay away from all windows.
  • Close all doors behind you as you move. Lower and turn down any blinds.
  • Once you have found a safe location, protect yourself by staying close to the floor, sitting or kneeling, and covering your head.
  • Do not use the elevators; do not leave the building. Do not use the telephone to attempt to get weather updates or other information.
  • If you are trapped in a perimeter office for any reason, seek protection under a desk.

After the weather has subsided, report any storm-related damage or leaks to the Building Management Office at (847) 597-2350 as soon as possible.
